In addition, this feature eliminates the need for the gardener to use only greenhouses of standard sizes and shapes, as happens with commercial models.

Optimal dimensions

The optimal (standard) size of a polycarbonate greenhouse is influenced by three main factors.

  1. Material dimensions.
  2. Plant height.
  3. Convenience and economy of operation.

As a rule, on sale there are sheets of cellular polycarbonate with dimensions of 6 × 2.1 m... Based on these dimensions, the optimal size of the greenhouse is also calculated. So for a rectangular gable version, it will be convenient to cut the sheet across into four equal parts. Accordingly, the height of the side walls and the length of each slope will be 1.5 m.

All work should be divided into several stages.

Stage 1. Arrangement of the foundation

Since greenhouses made of cellular polycarbonate most often have significant dimensions, under them it is recommended to equip reliable foundations... If you plan to operate the greenhouse for more than one year, then the ideal option would be to create shallow strip foundation.

The procedure for this will be as follows:

  1. The perimeter of the structure is outlined.
  2. A trench is dug 40 cm deep and 25 cm wide.
  3. Formwork is installed from boards or dense sheet material (fiberboard, chipboard, plywood).
  4. A sand pillow with a thickness of 5-10 cm is poured.
  5. Reinforcement is laid either from metal wire, or from plastic or steel mesh.
  6. Concrete mortar is poured.

IMPORTANT
At the stage of construction of the foundation, it costs immediately lay in the supporting elements for fastening the frame... Most often, metal corners or pipe cuttings are used for these purposes. The distance between the supporting elements is 1 m.

Stage 2. Installation of the frame

The frame of greenhouses for polycarbonate is formed by hand as follows:

  • PPR-crosses are put on the supporting elements in the foundation, to which the elements of the lower horizontal stiffener are soldered;
  • After completing the formation of the lower stiffener, the elements of the bearing half-arcs are soldered to the crosses. The length of each element is 1 m;
  • similar to the lower rib, an intermediate stiffener is formed;

  • the middle elements of the bearing half-arcs are soldered and a second intermediate stiffening rib is created;
  • in the upper part of the resulting frame, a longitudinal ridge element is created in the same way from pieces of plastic pipes and crosses;
  • in the middle part of the ends, two vertical posts are driven in. One pair of these racks will act as a door frame. Therefore, the distance between these posts should be 80 cm;
  • end horizontal stiffeners are installed.

IMPORTANT
Soldering method polypropylene pipes allows you to achieve maximum frame strength for the greenhouse. However, in the absence of electricity on the site or, if necessary, have a collapsible structure, use assembly on self-tapping screws or using clamps.

Besides PPR pipes, the frame can be made on the basis of a profile metal pipe, a galvanized profile or a wooden bar... Option with metal profile pipe gives the frame structure maximum strength. However, due to the impossibility of bending a metal pipe, all straight frame elements have to be positioned at an angle to each other.

As a result, polycarbonate on such a frame has to be fixed only pointwise and in the attachment points the plastic panel quickly collapses.

Galvanized profile convenient for the possibility of fastening with self-tapping screws. But due to the extremely low resistance to corrosion, such structures of polycarbonate greenhouses, assembled by hand, rarely withstand more than one or two seasons exploitation.

Wooden frames is easy to install and strong enough, but like a galvanized profile, a tree in a greenhouse atmosphere will not last long... It is possible to slightly increase the durability of a wooden frame by treating it with special waterproofing impregnations.

Step 3. Fastening polycarbonate panels

Exists two main ways of mounting panels made of cellular polycarbonate: dry and wet... In the latter case, the sheets are simply glued to the base. However, in relation to arched greenhouses with a frame made of polypropylene pipes, most often the dry method is used, i.e. fasteners with screws and washers.

So that the self-tapping screw does not damage the plastic panel, holes are pre-made in the right places in it. This can be done with an ordinary drill. The minimum distance to the edge of the web is 36 mm. Drilling is possible only between the stiffeners in the polycarbonate panel.

IMPORTANT
The diameter of the holes to be drilled should be 2-3 mm larger than the diameter of the fastening screws. Otherwise, thermal expansion may damage the material on the thread of the self-tapping screw.

The distance between the fasteners depends on the thickness of the cellular polycarbonate. So, for sheets with a thickness of 8-10 mm, most often used for greenhouses, fasteners should be 40-50 cm apart... For thicker specimens, the distance can be increased to 60-80 cm.

In addition to the screws themselves, the fastener includes thermal washers with a cover. Their purpose is to keep the polycarbonate in close contact with the frame even during thermal expansion. Rigid fastening without thermal washers will lead to rapid material destruction.

Polycarbonate sheets are interconnected by one-piece or split profiles. These profiles allow to seal the joints between panels, and also keep them stationary relative to each other.

End profiles are used to seal the ends. In their absence, the edges of polycarbonate sheets can be sealed with silicone sealant... If this is not done, then water will penetrate into the cavities of the polycarbonate and can lead to its deterioration.

Alternative constructions

In addition to arched, other types of greenhouses can be assembled on the basis of cellular polycarbonate.

1. Do-it-yourself rectangular polycarbonate greenhouse

The shape of the greenhouse in the form of a regular rectangle is selected only for small structures... With their help, you can insulate one separate bed in the spring season. It is undesirable to increase the size of a greenhouse of this shape, because a flat polycarbonate greenhouse roof cannot withstand the accumulated snow... Also, rectangular greenhouses poorly resist gusts of wind.

2. Do-it-yourself single-slope polycarbonate greenhouse

Such a structure is almost indistinguishable from a flat roof structure. The only difference is the height of the walls. The back wall is made much higher than the front.

Shed greenhouses are conveniently placed in the immediate vicinity of the southern wall of the house... In this case, the slope of the roof will be optimal to obtain the maximum solar energy.

3. Gable greenhouse

It is reasonable to use a gable roof for a polycarbonate greenhouse built with your own hands in cases where the grown plants will require a maximum of free space. This design will allow you to arrange straight walls, increasing the internal volume (in comparison with arched).

The disadvantage of such a structure is a more complex structure that requires the creation of a rafter system.

4. Prefabricated greenhouse

The prefabricated version of the greenhouse is convenient because in the hot months it can be removed from the site altogether, thereby freeing up space. In addition, dPrefabricated greenhouses do not require serious foundationsto keep the land useable.

The installation of such greenhouses should not include welding, all fasteners must be carried out on threaded connections or on clamps.

How to make a window, a window and a door

Any greenhouse must have an effective ventilation system.... This will reduce the humidity level and regulate the temperature. The polycarbonate greenhouse is ventilated through windows and vents.

To equip windows or a window, it is necessary to provide appropriate places in the frame of the greenhouse. Windows are most often located on vertical walls, and the vents are located above the front door at the end.

To create the window frame, the same construction materials are used as for the entire frame of the greenhouse. The easiest way to arrange a window is by cutting in two additional horizontal frame ties between the vertical supports.

Structurally, the greenhouse door, window and vent may differ only in size. The easiest way to make them from the remains of polycarbonate, fixing the material on a light frame and providing it with light loops. If necessary, the door can be made in a more serious version by installing a full-fledged door frame made of wood.
