The beauty of gloxinia has long become a favorite among experienced flower growers and home lovers. This plant, with proper care, is not whimsical and is able to delight its household with flowering for a long time.

Few people know that gloxinia can be easily propagated at home to fill the whole house with a riot of colors. Having studied the simple rules of reproduction and rooting of a plant, everyone will be able to create a whole greenhouse at home with their own hands.

In our article, we will take a closer look at all the ways to reproduce this beauty. You can also watch a useful video on this topic.

When does it multiply?

The breeding period of gloxinia for different methods will differ:

  • planting from seeds is best from November to February;
  • if you plant gloxinia by dividing the tubers, then the best period for this is from February to May;
  • if propagated by cuttings, then a twig with young leaves should be planted somewhere in March.

Preparing for the process

Attention: An adult and healthy plant that does not have external damage can be propagated. If gloxinia is propagated by dividing a tuber, then exceptionally large tubers that have two or more processes can be divided.

The most laborious in preparing an indoor flower for reproduction is the collection of seeds. Gloxinia seeds appear by artificial pollination... On the second day after the blooming of the bud, you need to transfer the pollen to the flower with a small brush. Seeds ripen in capsules within 2 months.

How to propagate a plant?

How to propagate a plant correctly? This can be done in 5 ways, which are described below.

The easiest way to propagate gloxinia by cuttings is... Leafy cuttings take root very well and quickly give new roots.

  1. in an adult healthy plant, a leaf with a small petiole of 1-1.5 centimeters is cut;
  2. root the petiole in a mixture of peat and sand in a 1: 1 ratio;
  3. cover this planting with glass or film to create a greenhouse effect;
  4. Once a day, the seedlings need to be ventilated.

After 3 weeks, young tubers are formed, then the plant can be fully opened and transplanted to a permanent place of growth.

For reproduction in this way, only a healthy tuber is taken from an adult plant.... Procedure:

  1. a large tuber must be cleaned of soil residues;
  2. with a sharp knife, divide the tuber into parts, so that each part contains a separate shoot;
  3. the places of the cuts must be dried with wood ash;
  4. each resulting piece of root must be planted in a separate pot, like a full-fledged tuber.

Important: Do not water this plant for the first 3 days.

You will find instructions for planting gloxinia with tuber and seeds in a separate article.

A peduncle is a shoot of a plant without leaves on which a flower is located. This method of reproduction of gloxinia is considered the most difficult, since the peduncle can not take root for a very long time or not let them go at all.

  1. cut off the peduncle with a leg about 3-5 centimeters;
  2. place the appendix in a container with water so that it plunges into the liquid by 1.5-2 centimeters, the water will need to be refilled periodically;
  3. wait for the appearance of young roots on the peduncle;
  4. plant a young shoot in soil to a depth of 2-3 centimeters.

  1. cut off the sheet at the very base of the outlet;
  2. cut the leaf plate from the back side across the protruding veins in thickened places;
  3. put the sheet on moistened soil and press the cuts to the soil;
  4. create a greenhouse effect with film or glass.

In the places of the cuts, roots form over time, and then small tuber will formand. They can be planted in separate containers like full adult tubers.

There is also a method for rooting a leaf cuttings:

  1. in June-July, take one leaf from the bottom of the plant;
  2. place the petiole in a container with water so that it is immersed in the liquid by 1.5-2 centimeters, the water will need to be refilled periodically;
  3. keep the leaf in water until young roots form on the cutting;
  4. plant a young shoot in soil to a depth of 2-3 centimeters.

The order of planting a plant from seeds:

  1. from November to February, you need to sow seeds in a mixture of leafy earth, peat and sand in a 1: 1: 1 ratio;
  2. do not bury the seeds, but only lightly sprinkle them with earth;
  3. put a container with seeds in a bright and warm place, periodically spray the soil with warm water from a sprayer;
  4. to create a greenhouse effect, cover crops with foil and periodically ventilate.

Sprouts appear in 14-20 days. Young plants with 2-3 leaves can already be transplanted into a separate permanent pot.

How to root at home?

To root gloxinia, with any method of plant propagation, you need to wait for the roots or tubers to appear. Next, the plant is planted in a soil composition:

  • 2 parts of leafy soil;
  • 1 part of peat or greenhouse land;
  • 1 part river sand.

Soil for gloxinia should be low acidity and breathable. To do this, you need to loosen it well. It is also imperative to decontaminate the soil. For this, a solution of a special agent Maxim is suitable, for 2 liters of water 1 ampoule of the drug.

Before planting, good drainage must be placed on the bottom of the pot.... A gloxinia pot should be chosen shallow, but wide. Since the root system of the plant is shallow and does not require strong deepening.

In order for the plant to quickly take root in a new place, its root part can be treated with special means to accelerate the formation of roots (tubers):

  • Kornevin.
  • Immunocyte.
  • Humisol.
  • Zircon.

Possible difficulties

Even if during the reproduction of gloxinia in any of the possible ways to do everything as correctly and in stages as possible, there may still be difficulties in the further growth and development of young plants.

Consider the most common gloxinia breeding problems:

  • the rooted leaf petiole withers;
  • the divisible leaf dries up;
  • leaf petiole produces roots, but does not form tubers;
  • rotting of the root and ground part of the plant due to deep burial into the soil;
  • drying out of small tubers.

Flower care during cultivation

There are a number of rules for caring for gloxinia after breeding for its further comfortable development.

Temperature regimes

This indicator can vary under different conditions:

  • at the stage of germination of young shoots, the temperature should be at least + 25 ° C;
  • after rooting of gloxinia, the temperature should vary from + 18 ° C to + 22 ° C.

Air humidity

Gloxinia feels well with an air humidity of 50%, not lower... If it is not possible to organize such conditions, then the permissible limits of this indicator are 70-80%.

To increase the moisture readings, it is worth placing a pot with a plant on a pallet:

  • with wet expanded clay;
  • with water;
  • with moss.

Do not spray the ground part of the plant, as the gloxinia will get sick, brown dry spots will appear on the leaves and it will die.

For irrigation, it is recommended to use only soft water (rain, thawed, boiled, filtered, settled). Watering gloxinia is best done from a pallet or along the edge of a as not to fall on the ground part of the plant.

Advice: If watering from a flower from a pallet, it is necessary to drain the water from it after 15-20 minutes in order to prevent the earthen coma from being oversaturated with water. Water for irrigation should be at room temperature or slightly warmer, but not colder.

Top dressing

The first 2 months after planting young plants, they do not need to be fertilized.... After 60 days, it is necessary to feed gloxinia 1 time in 10 days. If this is not done, the plant may stop developing while still in the state of dormant vegetative buds.

We recommend watching a video about feeding gloxinia:

This is not to say that all methods of reproduction of gloxinia are easy to perform, but if you follow the points of simple instructions, then the process of breeding many of these indoor flowers is not so laborious.

You should not wait for the rooting of all young sprouts at once, but also do not despair, soon everything will work out. And with proper care of the plant, there will be no problems at all, and you can breed a whole botanical garden of the beauties of gloxinia at home.
