Garlic is one of the most common and popular ingredients in cooking and medicine. It has a number of useful properties: antimalarial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, vitamin and even antitumor. This, coupled with affordability, makes it simply irreplaceable, especially for flu and colds, when you do not want to get sick at all, and medications can do not so much benefit as harm.

It is better to consume garlic on an ongoing basis, without waiting for the disease. It has been known for a long time that garlic increases general immunity, 1-2 cloves per day will significantly reduce the chance of catching a cold. Consuming garlic at the time of a cold will not immediately cure it, but will help the body fight the disease and, as already mentioned, prevent the disease in the future.

Does the plant help against influenza and how exactly?

But what is the reason for the truly miraculous effect of this product? It's all about the composition:

  • Phytoncides - suppress the development and lead to the destruction of various pathogenic organisms, such as microbes, fungi, bacteria, etc.
  • Volatiles - are responsible for the extraction and use of essential garlic essence, which has antiviral and antibacterial effect.
  • Allicin - endows garlic with antioxidant properties, that is, remove toxins from the body. It is worth noting that allicin disappears when cooked, so it is best to consume garlic unprocessed.

Which is better - onion or garlic culture?

Traditional medicine is also known for the "brother" of garlic - onions. Onions, which have a less pungent taste and smell, are preferred by some. However, there are many similarities between both plants: the presence of sulfides and phytoncides, which help to strengthen the immune system, a scattering of vitamins and minerals - all this makes us come to the conclusion about their equal usefulness. Hence, in the choice between them, the decisive factor will be a person's taste preferences and his inner state. And if the second is in a comparative order, then you should not deny yourself either one or the other.

Treatment for children and adults - what's the difference?

Nevertheless, everything is good in moderation. Don't be too zealous. A normal serving of garlic per day for the average person is 1-3 cloves per day, if the norm is exceeded, heartburn, problems with the intestinal microflora and blood clotting are possible, and in especially advanced cases, even mucosal burns (about how garlic affects the digestive tract and why after eating it, the stomach hurts, we told here, and is it possible to eat garlic without chewing and at what time of day it is better to eat it, read here).

How to use garlic for children? For children, there are other rules for eating garlic:

  • For the first time, a child can be introduced to garlic at the age of 8-9 months by adding small amounts of boiled garlic in mashed potatoes, porridge and meat patties. No more than twice a week.
  • At the age of one year and above, the child can already consume this product in its raw form.
  • Up to 3 years old, the norm for a child is half a clove a day, but not more than 3-5 times a week.
  • For children over 3 years old, the consumption rate is close to that of an adult.

There are also a number of contraindications for the treatment of colds and flu with garlic:

  • If pregnant or breastfeeding: Garlic may cause an allergic reaction in a baby.
  • For problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
  • With diseases of the liver and kidneys.
  • For allergies.
  • With epilepsy.
  • For problems with the cardiovascular system.
  • For problems with excess weight.

In addition to the above, there are several additional rules for children. Garlic is not recommended for children:

  • Above 38 C.
  • In the presence of allergies or in case of a categorical refusal of the child.
