Good news for greenery lovers: juicy parsley can be cultivated not only with seeds, but also in seedlings!

The laborious process is very efficient. Given the planting technology, you can get excellent quality early vitamin greens.

Let's take a closer look at all the features of this method and find out whether it is possible to plant any varieties of parsley by seedlings, how to plant seeds correctly and when to transplant the resulting seedlings into open ground.

Can you use this method?

Growing greens by seeds is a common method among gardeners, but to get early parsley, it is recommended to use another method - cultivation through seedlings.

Greens are grown in two ways:

  1. Seeds are sown in containers, and then they are transferred with the soil, without disturbing the root system of the plants.
  2. Seedlings are obtained immediately in pots, and then transplanted into the ground (cultivation with open root systems).

When transferring seedlings grown by the first method to the beds, the greenery continues to grow without significant changes. In the second method of cultivation, parsley, moved to the site, for some time adapts to new conditions.

Important! With the help of seedlings, lush greens are obtained earlier, about 1.5 or 2 months faster than from seeds planted in the ground.

Advantages and disadvantages

The seedling growing method has many advantages. These include:

  • Collection of abundant and early greens, different from the harvests obtained by sowing parsley seeds in open ground.
  • The use of smaller planting areas, as a result - the creation of optimal conditions for seedlings for development.
  • Saving planting material, this is especially important when cultivating expensive hybrid varieties. Seed consumption when planting on beds is greater than when using seedlings.
  • Cultivation of thermophilic varieties in the northern regions.
  • Elimination of seedling thinning.

The advantages will be evident only in the case of competent agricultural technology.

Among the disadvantages of the method are:

  • The need for the construction of greenhouses, hotbeds, nurseries. In this case, you need a stock of covering materials: glass, films.
  • Labor intensity and labor input of the process.
  • Risk of damage to the root system when planting seedlings without pots in the ground.

It takes time for the parsley roots to recover, in addition, the crops already use up the accumulated nutrients, so it will be necessary to feed the greens.

What seedlings look like: description and photo

The first "loops" of seedlings appear at a stable temperature of +25 degrees. The crops are thoroughly ventilated by lifting glass or polyethylene. The soil ball should be slightly damp. Young shoots of light green color are usually weak, poorly responsive to sunlight, drying out of the upper soil layer. Such crops are irrigated from a syringe or spray bottle.

30 days after germination, a second pair of green leaves appears on the shoots. With the onset of May, in the middle lane, seedlings can already be safely planted in the ground in the beds.

Below you can see a photo of parsley planted for seedlings:

The timing associated with such cultivation

The timing of planting greenery depends on the climatic characteristics of the region. The main condition for high-quality growing of seedlings is the presence of a greenhouse. Experts recommend growing greens using mobile film tunnels. They are placed in greenhouses.

  • In central Russia, planting begins in February.
  • In Siberia, sowing in greenhouses is acceptable towards the end of March.
  • In the Urals - around the end of February or March.

It is also recommended to focus on the amount of daylight hours, because good lighting is necessary for the development of strong seedlings.

In open ground, parsley seedlings are sown:

  • Since the beginning of May - in central Russia.
  • From about the middle of the last month of spring - in the Urals.
  • At the very beginning of June - in Siberia.

Parsley is a cold-resistant culture, seedlings develop well even with temperature extremes.

Is the method suitable for root and leaf varieties?

Important! Seedling parsley is more suitable for leafy greens.

Experienced gardeners do not recommend cultivating root plants in this way. There is a high probability of root damage when transplanted into the ground. As a result, ugly branched roots can be obtained. The whole difference lies in the adaptation of the root system to a new planting site, even with small damage this will be problematic.

You can, of course, try the careful handling of seedlings together with the soil layer, this is the only option that is suitable for such cultivation without disturbing the root system of the seedlings. But this is difficult to do. Root varieties are more used for winter plantings, they are much more effective.

Which varieties are better to choose?

For growing parsley through seedlings, it is recommended to select high-yielding types of greens, with a good degree of regrowth after cutting, and an unpretentious root system. Leafy varieties are best cultivated, eg:

"Aster"

Curly-leaved parsley with early ripeness. 65 days after germination, it can be eaten. The corrugated sheet mass grows quickly after the cuts.

"Plain sheet"

This variety of greens is high yielding. Fragrant crops are distinguished by spreading rosettes, which can contain from 30 to 100 leaves. Technical ripeness occurs in 70 days.

"Breeze"

Ripeness is 80 days. Large parsley. Juicy greens have good keeping quality.

Esmeralda

Mid-season parsley. The culture is curly, in the outlet you can count up to 30 leaves. The petioles are short. Differs in a good degree of regrowth after slicing.

"Bravo"

Parsley of medium ripeness, high-yielding, with a rosette height of 35 cm.

"Bogatyr"

Late ripeness variety, cut only on 90–140 days. Crops are shade-tolerant, grow well, high-yielding.

"Sandwich"

Parsley ripens quickly. After 65 days, you can get the first harvest. The main feature is cold resistance.

"Curly"

Popular leafy greens. Differs in pleasant taste, fringed leaves, medium early ripeness.

The varieties listed above are best suited for growing in seedlings.

Attention! The quality of the parsley crop obtained will depend on the competent care of the crops both during planting in greenhouse conditions and when transferring seedlings to the site.

Step-by-step instructions on how to plant correctly

Before planting greenery, preparatory measures are carried out: pick up containers, prepare soil mixture, process seeds, think over the arrangement of greenhouses.

Required inventory

To plant seeds for seedlings, you will need:

  • small shoulder blade;
  • mini rake;
  • watering can;
  • spray gun for seedling irrigation;
  • landing scoop;
  • film;
  • glass;
  • pick up containers for sowing.

Seeds can be grown using:

  • flower pots;
  • boxes;
  • peat cups (tablets);
  • plastic cassettes;
  • plastic containers.

Small drainage holes must be made in the containers. The inventory must be clean.

Enumeration and processing of seeds

For planting, the planting material of the last season is selected. Parsley seedlings have a high concentration of essential oils that can inhibit the growth of greens.

To speed up the emergence of sprouts, you need to prepare the seeds. This can be done in several ways:

  1. Essential oils are removed by soaking the grains for 3 days in warm water. The fluid is changed once a day. When the seedlings are well dried, wrapped in paper, they are placed in the refrigerator for 7 days.
  2. The grains are also soaked first using warm water. Then spread on a soft cloth (thin layer). Re-moisten in warm liquid. The seeds are expected to hatch, periodically mixing the grains and moistening the material.

Thanks to such procedures, they are guaranteed to get good shoots and abundant greens in the future.

Selection and preparation of soil

For planting, you can purchase specialized soil for vegetables and herbs., for example, universal soil mixtures for seedlings, such as:

  • "Bogatyr" from the manufacturer "Lama Peat";
  • "Botany";
  • "Vermigrunt";
  • "Gardener".

Advice. Experts recommend using soil from the garden for sowing (preferably sandy loam) or mix it with the finished purchased mixture (in equal proportion).

To reduce the acidity of the soil used, add 3 large spoons of chalk and superphosphates to a bucket of earth. Thanks to this, the growth of the root system of future greens will improve.

The sowing soil must be prepared 1.5 or 2 months before the actual sowing procedure. Sand must be added to clay soil.

Sowing rules

How to plant seeds correctly to get seedlings:

  1. Grooves are made in the ground with a depth of 10 mm.
  2. It is better to sow seeds by mixing with sand. Experienced gardeners distribute the seeds by sowing them individually with an indent of 20 or 30 mm. If you do it differently, you can get heaps of grains that will need to be dived in the future.
  3. Sprinkle all the grooves with soil.
  4. Water using warm water. They do this carefully so that the seeds do not float.
  5. The containers are covered with polyethylene or glass to create a greenhouse.
  6. Place the pots on the sunny side.

Seedling care

Seedlings appear faster with a stable temperature regime of +25 degrees.

The process of caring for seedlings consists of the following stages:

  1. regular ventilation of crops;
  2. high-quality lighting;
  3. glaze;
  4. dressing.

The crops are aired every day by lifting the film or glass. The soil should be slightly damp. Watering is done by drip from a syringe, pipette or spray bottle; when the mini-seedlings get stronger, you can irrigate them already from a spoon. Accuracy is necessary so as not to damage the fragile twigs of the seedlings. The watering procedure is carried out in the evening.

Once every 10 days, the greens are fed. Use mineral complementary foods (solution), which can be purchased in specialized stores. Add about 0.5 g per liter of pure water.

Important! A lot of light is needed for the development of parsley seedlings. The better the light in the room, the faster the greenery grows.

30 days after germination, a second pair of leaves appears. With thickened landings, it is necessary to make a dive - transplanting some seedlings to another place in separate pots or cups. If there is enough space in the containers, then the thinning procedure is not carried out.

Preparing the soil in the garden

The soil must be treated in advance. Digging is done on the site in the fall, then the mullein is introduced. Sifted sand and a little sawdust are added to the clay soil. In early spring, the site is loosened, mineral nutrients are added. Before direct planting, the fertile soil is well moistened.

Transfer of grown plants to open ground

Parsley seedlings are placed at a distance of 50-80 mm, the gap between the beds should be 25 cm.

The technique of planting in open ground depends on factors:

  • containers in which the seedlings were grown;
  • the size and age of crops;
  • varieties.
  1. It is easiest to place seedlings in peat pots or tablets on the site, such containers are lowered into pre-dug holes, sprinkled with a soil layer, slightly compacted, watered abundantly.
  2. Paper cups, in which the seedlings were cultivated, are cut lengthwise, the plants are carefully removed from them, holding the parsley by the stem, trying not to disturb the soil lump. Only then are the seedlings lowered into the holes, sprinkled, compacted, irrigated.

    In cloudy weather, disembarkation is carried out in the morning, and in sunny weather - in the late afternoon. For the safety of the entire process for crops, the seedlings are stopped to water a few days before the procedure (applicable only for young seedlings).

  3. 1 hour or 1.5 hours before placing in the ground, parsley is abundantly watered so that the earthen lump is very wet and does not disintegrate when transferred to a new place.
  4. Plastic cups with seedlings are carefully turned over to get sprouts with a lump, and they are removed from the culture cassettes using a spatula - a spatula, and from common boxes - with a planting shovel, digging in and extracting plants with earthy clods.

Important! Seedlings from boxes will take root much better when they are carried to the planting site one piece at a time and in a scoop.

Further care of plants

Parsley seedlings planted in open beds are regularly weeded, watered, fertilized. It is recommended to irrigate crops in the early morning or evening. Nutrients are added when parsley has 3 large leaves, as well as when cutting the culture. To obtain a lush green mass, it is necessary to apply a complete mineral fertilizer with nitrogen.

A non-standard method of rolling for home use

The rolling method of parsley is suitable for fast emergence. Seeds - seedlings can be kept in paper for a long time, which is a great help in the case when the weather is not suitable for planting seedlings in the ground. Another advantage of the method is space saving.

The technology of planting seeds at home using roll-ups:

  1. Take a plastic bag, which is slightly wider than a roll of toilet paper. Leave it on a flat surface.
  2. Three layers of toilet paper are laid out on the bag: the first - along the upper edge of the package, the second - at the level with the lower edge, the third - on the upper edge.
  3. A solution is made in a container by adding ordinary hydrogen peroxide (1 large spoon) to water (0.5 l). Wet the paper sheets.
  4. The seeds are laid out, retreating from the upper edge by 0.5 mm (the distance depends on the size of the seeds).
  5. A roll-up roll with planting material is rolled up, placed in a container with water. At the bottom of the container, the same solution with peroxide is poured with which the paper was wetted.
  6. The bags are signed. A plastic bag is put on the entire container with roll-ups to retain moisture, left in a warm place (even shaded) until shoots appear.

The seedlings will appear very quickly. You can keep the seedlings until the moment is convenient for planting in the beds.

Problems and difficulties, ways to solve them

Important conditions for the competent cultivation of parsley seedlings are taking into account the growing season of crops, ensuring optimal conditions for the development of greenery, in particular, correct lighting, calculating the timing of sowing seeds (depending on the variety). Without taking these components into account, you may not get high-quality seedlings.

A common misconception when growing seedlings is cultivating them in one container due to space savings. First, it seems, strong roots are formed at the seedlings, which is undoubtedly useful.But at the same time there is a big problem, because the seedlings will have to be divided as they grow, it will be a stressful situation for crops, since with such a procedure it is practically impossible not to damage the roots.

The transplant also requires adaptation. For early varieties, this can provoke a delay in the ripening of the entire crop. It is advisable not to save, but immediately use for crops, for example, peat cups, tablets, separate paper containers, the use of which will not damage the sprouts.

Important! Often, overgrowth of seedlings is contained by less watering, but this is only acceptable for young seedlings. For mature seedlings, limiting watering is stress.

In semi-dark rooms, additional lighting lamps are installed, only in this case the seedlings will develop well.

Growing seedlings is a laborious process. But with proper cultivation, you can get strong shoots. A properly carried out procedure for planting crops in open ground is the key to excellent adaptation of plants in the beds. A large harvest of juicy early greens will be a reward for the gardener for hard work.
