Trumpet geranium is a popular plant that is used for vertical landscaping and hanging planters.

A beautiful and non-capricious plant always pleases a passer-by with its amazing flowering, gorgeous greenery, brightness and variety of colors.

It is simple and unpretentious to care for. Even a novice florist can cope with its cultivation and breeding.

Differences between the ivy-leaved plant and the usual

Important. The ampelous geranium got its name thanks to its well-developed, flexible, cascading shoots, the length of which can reach 90 cm.

In ordinary geraniums, the stem is erect, small in size.

The ampel variety differs not only in the length of the shoots, but also in the leaves. In geranium, the leaves have a velvety surface, in ampelous - a leaf plate:

  • smooth;
  • dense;
  • leathery.

Outwardly, it resembles an ivy leaf, therefore sometimes the plant is called "ivy pelargonium".

Peduncles are formed in the leaf axils.

Flowers of ampelous geranium up to 4 cm in diameter, collected in large inflorescences, umbrellas. Depending on the variety flowers can be simple or double.

The color of the petals is bright and spectacular, in all shades of pink and red. Some hybrid varieties have spots and stripes of a contrasting color or border on the petals.

Ampel species are very popular with florists and landscape designers. Unlike other types, the ampelous form has a number of advantages:

  • leaving is not difficult;
  • can be grown as a perennial form in indoor conditions or as an annual in a personal plot;
  • long flowering period from spring to the first autumn frosts;
  • suitable for hanging gardens;
  • tolerates direct sunlight well;
  • drought-resistant;
  • tolerates a slight drop in temperature well.

Attention. The plant has only one drawback - with high humidity, the root system and geranium stems rot.

Reproduction at home

At home, ampelous geraniums are propagated in two ways: by seeds and cuttings.

How to propagate by cuttings?

Propagation by cuttings allows for healthy plants, which completely retain varietal characteristics.

Cuttings are cut after the end of the flowering period at the end of August, when the plants are being prepared for winter. If in winter the flower has grown well, then spring cuttings can also be used for rooting. In this case, the shoots for planting are cut at the beginning of March.

Reproduction by cuttings allows you to rejuvenate the mother plant and give the flower a shape.

During what period can it be done?

Reproduction by cuttings is carried out in early spring or summer, when seasonal pruning is carried out.

In spring and summer, plants begin the growing season, when metabolic processes are activated. At this time, you can create favorable conditions for rooting:

  • create the required temperature regime;
  • provide the geranium with the necessary amount of light.

Important. Shoots cut in autumn and winter give little growth, and they are also susceptible to diseases and pests.

How to prepare cuttings?

For reproduction, choose young shoots 10 - 12 cm long with their own leaves:

  1. Cuttings are cut with a sharp knife from the top of the mother bush.
  2. The cut is treated with crushed charcoal or activated carbon.
  3. The shoot is air-dried for 2 - 6 hours. During this time, a thin film forms on the cut, which protects the shoot from the ingress of fungi and viruses.
  4. After that, the plants are planted along the edge of the pot at a short distance from each other.

How to root?

Rooting of ampelous geranium does not require special conditions. Roots appear 15 to 20 days after cutting from the mother plant. Cut cuttings are planted in pots with a diameter of 7-10 cm with large drainage holes.

For planting, a ready-made soil mixture is used, you can also prepare it yourself from equal parts:

  • turf land;
  • peat;
  • humus;
  • sand.

The main thing is that it is loose, it is good for moisture and air.

Before planting, the soil is disinfected and well moistened with warm water. The cuttings are buried 4 - 5 cm and transferred to a bright room with a temperature of 22 - 25 ° C. Seedlings are watered as the top layer of the soil dries up.

After the appearance of several additional leaves, the crown of the plant is pinched. This measure stimulates the development of lateral shoots.

How to transplant to a permanent place?

Reference. The roots of the ampelous geranium develop very slowly. The healthy appearance of the flower indicates that the root system has formed.

The plant is not demanding on the composition of the soil. Nutritious, loose, loamy soil is suitable for planting.

The plant does not tolerate stagnant moisture, therefore, drainage is essential. The planter intended for planting must have large holes.

In addition, drainage from expanded clay, shards or small stones must be placed on the bottom of the container.

The plant is transferred into a new pot, keeping an earthen lump. Then all the voids are filled with soil and lightly tamped. After planting, geraniums are watered with warm filtered water.

How to get from seeds?

Reproduction of ampelous geranium by seeds is a rather laborious process. This breeding method is used to grow a large volume of planting material.

For example, for landscaping:

  • squares;
  • parks;
  • personal plots.

A crop grown from seeds has a strong immunity, resistant to adverse weather conditions. Less commonly attacked by pests.

Sowing is carried out from December to the end of April. Seeds are sown in containers or boxes filled with potting soil from:

  • peat;
  • sand;
  • garden land.

The soil should be loose and light.

  1. The planting material is embedded in grooves or holes to a depth of 5 mm.
  2. The boxes are covered with foil or glass and transferred to a room with a temperature of 20 - 22 ° C.
  3. When seedlings appear, the film is removed and the temperature is lowered to 15 ° C.

Young plants need regular watering. Waterlogging or drying out of the soil should not be allowed.

After the appearance of real leaves, the plants dive and carry out the first feeding with complex mineral fertilizer.

2 months after the appearance of the first shoots, the ampelous geranium is transplanted to a permanent place. Large, deep flowerpots should not be used.

For planting, pots are suitable, the depth of which is 2 cm greater than the size of the horse system.

Possible problems

When propagating ivy geraniums, growers may face some difficulties:

  • plants do not tolerate excess moisture well, therefore rooting should be carried out in soil, and not in water;
  • cuttings planted in the ground should not be covered with jars or bags, as the greenhouse effect can cause rotting of leaves and stems.

Important. During rooting, the air temperature must be kept below 25 ° C. In winter, it can be lowered by a few degrees.

Further care

The plant is undemanding to care. However, for development and lush flowering, he needs to create the right conditions:

  • Lighting. Ampel geranium needs bright lighting and a long day of light for long flowering. Plant pots should be placed on southern windows. The flower tolerates a lack of moisture well, so in the summer it can be placed on open balconies or verandas.
  • Temperature. The optimum temperature for growing is 22 - 25 ° C. At higher temperatures, the flower retains its decorative qualities. In winter, geraniums do well at 15 ° C.
  • Watering. In hot weather, the flower needs frequent watering. Do not overmoisten the soil, as stagnant moisture can lead to root rot and the development of fungal diseases. In winter, during the dormant period, the soil is moistened once every 10 - 15 days. The leaves of the ampelous geranium are not sprayed, since the ingress of moisture into the axils of the leaves causes them to rot.
  • Top dressing. Fertilization is carried out during the period of active growth once every 7 to 10 days. As a top dressing, ready-made complex formulations containing potassium and phosphorus are used. It is necessary to limit the introduction of mixtures with a high content of magnesium and sulfur, which slow down the process of bud formation, and nitrogen, which promotes the growth of green mass.
  • Pruning. The procedure is performed to rejuvenate the plant. Before the onset of the dormant period in the mother plant, all stems are removed, leaving two lower leaves with axillary shoots. With the onset of spring, it is necessary to remove the bare branches, keeping healthy and young. To maintain the attractive appearance of the flower, woody shoots, dried leaves and inflorescences should be periodically removed.

Ampel geranium is an amazingly beautiful plant that has won the love of many flower growers. It is unpretentious to care for and easy to reproduce. It is used to decorate gardens, parks and balconies and living spaces. Thanks to long flowering, it is able to decorate any space.
