We all know that the benefits of vegetables are invaluable for our health and full development. Each vegetable is a storehouse of vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
Cabbage is no exception, including broccoli. Its unique composition allows you to normalize the work of the whole body and prevent many diseases.

What it is?
So, broccoli is an annual vegetable, which belongs to the Cabbage family and is a type of cabbage.
The length of the shoot in the first year can reach both half a meter and a meter. At the end of the shoot, many peduncles are formed, from which green buds are released over time. They are all assembled into a single head. In order to be used as food, this head is cut off even before the yellow flowers appear on it.
A sign that broccoli can be harvested is head volume: it should be about 13-17 centimeters. The main thing when harvesting is not to miss the moment. Overexpose for 2-3 days and the cabbage will be covered with yellow flowers, which means the harvest will be lost.
Remember that as soon as the head of cabbage has grown to the desired size and turned into a rich green color, it must be removed. It is best to do this in the early morning, and start the process with a central head of cabbage. After harvesting, leave the bush in the ground and, after a while, it will give new side shoots, and you will get another crop.
The ideal climate for this cabbage is cool and moist. At the same time, the temperature should be kept within 18-23 degrees. If the climate is kept at the same temperate winter, broccoli will continue to bear fruit during this cold period.

For the first time such a variety of cabbage appeared 2000 years ago in Ancient Rome.... Even then, the inhabitants of this state appreciated the enormous benefits of broccoli. And only in the 16th century, cabbage was brought to France and began its journey throughout Europe.

Ripens for about two months. Differs in average productivity. Fruits grow large and reach 1-1.5 kg, dark green in color. Great for extreme growing conditions.
The ripening period is slightly longer - about 70 days. The head is relatively small - only 300 grams, but has a very juicy pulp.
ATTENTION! The disadvantage of this variety is that after cutting, the product does not give lateral processes.
The yield is higher than the previous variety - up to 3.5 kg per square meter.
The ripening period can range from 2 to 3 months.... The heads are very small - the maximum weight is 200 grams. Requires quick collection, since very soon after ripening, the fruits become loose and too soft. "Vitamin" broccoli produces lateral shoots after the main head is cut.
It grows for about three months. During this period, a medium-sized head grows - 400-600 grams. It gives a lot of lateral processes. Ideal for long-term storage and growing under extreme conditions.
Ripens longer than all previous brethren - about 100 days... It has a high yield, but the heads themselves are small - about 350 grams each. The lateral processes are even smaller - 50-70 grams.
Cold-resistant variety. Fruit size reaches 400 grams. The color of the head is deep green with a blue tint.
It grows 110 days. The head is distinguished by its massiveness and the presence of tubercles. The color is light green. After cutting the main head, small lateral ones ripen. Can grow in low temperatures and poor lighting.
The head is usually dense, but its weight does not exceed 200-300 grams. It can throw out the side heads after cutting off the main "baby".
This type of cabbage can be grown both in the greenhouse and in the open field.... For both the first and second options, you can plant seedlings or seeds right away.
IMPORTANT! You can plant seeds in open ground, starting at the end of May, when the ground warms up to at least 20 degrees.
Before planting, the following fertilizers must be applied to the soil:
- wood ash;
To properly prepare seeds for sowing, follow the instructions:
- Heat the water to 50 degrees, and place the planting material there for a quarter of an hour.
- Then we move it into cold water for 60 seconds.
- Leave for 12 hours in a solution of growth stimulants and fungicides.
- After that, we thoroughly rinse the seeds and send them to the refrigerator for a day.
- We dry, and the material for planting is ready!
After that, you can safely sow seeds in open ground.
The seed preparation algorithm is similar to the first case. Only in this situation, the prepared planting material is sent not to open ground, but to seedling boxes. And after four days the first sprouts of cabbage will be noticeable. And after 40 days, the seedlings will be ready for the "big swim" in the open field.
When and how to harvest?
For each variety, its own harvest dates are set.... But all of them are united by the following factor: as soon as green buds appear on the head, these heads need to be cut off. The inflorescences must not be allowed to bloom, and the fruits become yellow, it will no longer be possible to eat such broccoli.
It is the heads that need to be cut (first, the central ones are used). For this, a sharp knife is used and an incision is made obliquely. It is better to do this in the early morning, when there is still dew on the cabbage. Or late at night. This condition must be observed in order not to allow the stem to dry out, on which lateral processes should still appear.
How to store a vegetable?
- Select elastic heads without damage. Don't wash them!
- Make a few holes in a plastic bag and place the cabbage there.
ATTENTION! In this case, you do not need to tie the bag.
- Place the broccoli in the freezer.
- Pour 2-3 cm of water into a container, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the head of the cabbage itself.
- Put the prepared broccoli in a container, like a bouquet in a vase.
In a towel on the refrigerator shelf
Wrap the prepared vegetable with a moistened towel and place in the refrigerator (so cabbage can stay fresh for up to four days). Place it so that it is not adjacent to the fruit, because the buds can bloom due to the ethylene emitted by them.
Wrap the prepared broccoli well with cling film and place in the refrigerator in the vegetable compartment. In this form, the head can last up to 45 days.
What can be prepared from a vegetable?
Here your imagination and your taste preferences play the main role.... It can be a variety of soups, where broccoli will act as both the main ingredient and the secondary one.
